The Hindu holiday known as Raksha Bandhan, or simply Rakhi, honours love and brotherhood.

Raksha Bandhan is observed on the full moon of the Sravana month according to the lunar calendar. Raksha means protection, whereas the term bandhan means to tie.

Is Raksha Bandhan a Hindu festival?

More than 1 billion people across the world will be preparing to celebrate one of the oldest festivals in the Hindu calendar, Raksha Bandhan. The day – also known as “Rakhi” – offers Hindus the opportunity to celebrate the bond and love between a brother and sister, or siblings in general.

Raksha Bandhan is a holy festival of Hindus, this festival is celebrated on the full moon day of Shravan month. With the festival of Raksha Bandhan, the Hindu month of “Sawan” also comes to an end.

When tying a rakhi, what do you say?

“tena tvāmabhibadhnāmi rakṣe mā cala mā cala”

According to a historical context, when Rani Karmavati of Mewar came to know that Bahadur Shah was attacking her kingdom, she sent Rakhi to Humayun. Humayun had protected Queen Karmavati by keeping Rakhi as a shame.

Why do sisters bind their Rakhi?

A sister is in charge of tying a “rakhi,” a talisman or amulet bracelet, onto her brother’s right wrist at a Rakshabandhan ceremony; this rakhi is thought to symbolically safeguard him from difficulties in the coming year.

The festival of Rakshabandhan is organized in many places in India. This festival is also celebrated at the residence of the President and Prime Minister of India. In South India, Raksha Bandhan is called “Avani Avittam”.

During the Partition of Bengal (1905), Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore organised a large-scale Raksha Bandhan celebration and urged Hindu and Muslim women to tie rakhis on males from the opposing group to adopt them as brothers.

On Raksha Bandhan, which God is worshipped?

The Lord of Death, Yama, and his sister Yamuna observe the Raksha Bandhan rite. Yama acquired immortality after Yamuna tied a rakhi to him.
